About the photo
Berlin, 2019. Street photography project inspired by Ai Weiwei’s “Study of Perspectives” 1995 - 2017. This photo is part of a series of 5 images showing Berlin from a Black German perspective. Starting with the first image of German Reichstag from a slightly different perspective than the original by Ai Weiwei. This goes out to the German government at Deutscher Bundestag for their neo-liberal racist national, and neo-colonial racist international politics.
About the artist
Shaheen Wacker (they/them) is a Black, queer, feminist photographer, organiser and writer, working in the context of arts and activism. They co-founded a chapter of Black Lives Matter in Berlin in 2017 in order to stand up for the freedom and justice of Black people in Germany. Racism is an everyday life experience for Black people and is not only reflected in verbal insults and physical violence. This also applies to Germany.
People in this country experience racial discrimination on a personal and institutional level. This ranges from racial profiling, legislation such as changes in law enforcement acts, street naming, school education, but also by the media, to dealing with flight and the access to labor and housing markets.
In addition to all these topics, there are current events which show us that a continuous intervention by the population is required. These include incidents from around the world, such as the enslavement of Black people in Libya and the ongoing police violence in the US and Europe-wide, but also specifically in Germany, such as the serious deficits in shelters for refugees, racist attacks and racist incidents in educational institutions etc.
