About the photo

Photograph taken in 2020 in Baltimore. This image's intent is to show the expression of black boy joy and hope in the midst of being shown the opposite in society. It’s part of a larger series showing an alternative story of Icarus – the son of Daedalus who, to escape imprisonment, flies by means of artificial wings but falls into the sea and drowns when the wax of his swings melts as he flies too near the sun.

About the artist

Schaun Champion (she/her) is an international natural light photographer, filmmaker and instructor who specializes in portraiture, fine art and cultural documentary work. Using both analog and digital cameras, she’s inspired by film, music and all things vintage. She creates intentionally cinematic and honest imagery that illustrates the drama within the familiar while exploring themes of diversity and nostalgia.

Her subjects include Oscar-nominated cinematographer, Bradford Young, fashion designer, Bishme Cromartie, several public figures like D.Watkins, reality tv stars, independent/grammy-winning musicians, as well as friends, family, and strangers on the streets around the world.

She has developed the youth travel photography program, A Looking Glass Project, dedicated to helping underrepresented youth of Baltimore gain access to passports and travel both domestically and internationally, while developing their visual art skills. Currently, she is partnered with Morgan State University to bring photography education to the James E. Lewis Museum of Art: Youth Arts Institute.

Additionally, her work has been featured in Cultured Magazine, The New York Times, Essence Magazine, American Cinematographer Magazine, Baltimore Magazine, BmoreArt Magazine, Travel Noire, The Afro, Roc Nation, Blavity, xoNecole, Salon, Bustle, The Baltimore Sun, Soulbounce and more.
