About the illustration

This piece celebrates the relationship between nature, joy, and Blackness. Black joy is a form of resistance. Communing with nature is a restorative form of resistance for our community too. This piece also channels the energy of Eartha Kitt—a Black actress who made it a practice to embrace nature and joy.

About the artist

Paula Champagne (she/her) is a Visual Storyteller specializing in video, documentary photography, illustration, and graphic design. Champagne’s multimedia work communicates authentic human experiences. Inspired by her own experiences in the outdoors—her most recent passion projects explore and honor the intersection of Blackness, nature, and the quiet resistance of rest. She currently resides in Somerville, Massachusetts with her husband and their dog.
