About the photo:
This image is from a personal project called IAN. It's a male beauty story. I love debunking stereotypes and expectations for people in society, especially people of color. Putting my people in the light that my white counterparts have been put in all throughout time. Breaking down the assumptions of who we are, and allowing space to be who you want to be. There can be a fear of showing who you truly are as a person of color. The idea that you must ALWAYS be on the up and up to not be considered suspicious, to be able to be in the running for a job, to be accepted. The oppression of one's own personality, of one's own being can be devastating, and I don't think it even helps us stay safe. I think it's important to be able to take that power back, understand how much strength we have in the suffering of our ancestors, and how we should never be ashamed or scared to be who we truly are, dress the way we want to, act the way we want to, speak truth; show our true selves. The more we realize our strength and take back control, demand for safety and equality, the more opportunities our future generations will have to be their true selves.
About the artist:
Erica Génécé (she/her) is a New York City-based photographer and filmmaker whose focus is in celebrating people and cultures that might not have always been given the platform to express themselves. Deeply inspired by her Haitian heritage and the African Diaspora, she loves bringing strength, empowerment, and regality back to those groups through photographs and film. Génécé mixes her knowledge of history with a modern-day sensibility to produce a new and eclectic style. As the granddaughter of a seamstress, she has a great appreciation for fashion and learned the importance of being detail-oriented at a young age.
